The Volkswagen Tiguan has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Acadia doesn’t offer knee airbags.

With its standard Front Assist, the Volkswagen Tiguan is better at preventing collisions with pedestrians than the GMC Acadia, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:

The Tiguan has a standard Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Acadia doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Both the Tiguan and the Acadia have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, front seat center airbag, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

The Tiguan comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck. The Acadia’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

The Tiguan’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the Acadia’s (7/100,000 vs. 6/100,000).

Volkswagen pays for scheduled maintenance on the Tiguan for 2 years and 20,000 miles. Volkswagen will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. GMC only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Acadia.

The Volkswagen Tiguan’s engines use a cast iron block for durability, while the Acadia’s engine uses an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Tiguan’s reliability 29 points higher than the Acadia.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2026 Auto Issue reports that Volkswagen vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Volkswagen 7 places higher in reliability than GMC.

Regenerative brakes improve the Tiguan’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Acadia doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The Tiguan has a standard locking fuel door which locks and unlocks with the power locks. The fuel filler door is not lockable on the Acadia. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank.

The Tiguan’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Acadia’s optional 45 series tires.

The Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo handles at .85 G’s, while the Acadia Denali AWD pulls only .81 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the Acadia Denali AWD (27 seconds @ .67 average G’s vs. 27.5 seconds @ .63 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Tiguan’s turning circle is .7 feet tighter than the Acadia Elevation’s (38.1 feet vs. 38.8 feet). The Tiguan’s turning circle is 2 feet tighter than the Acadia Denali Reserve’s (38.1 feet vs. 40.1 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Tiguan has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Acadia Elevation (7 vs. 6.8 inches), allowing the Tiguan to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Volkswagen Tiguan may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 700 to 950 pounds less than the GMC Acadia.

The Tiguan is 1 foot, 7.6 inches shorter than the Acadia, making the Tiguan easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Tiguan is 6.6 inches narrower than the Acadia, making the Tiguan easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

The Tiguan has a much larger cargo volume than the Acadia with its rear seat up (33.8 vs. 23 cubic feet).

Unlike the driver-only memory seat and mirrors in the Acadia Denali, the Tiguan SEL has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Tiguan’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Acadia’s passenger windows don’t close automatically.

If the windows are left open on the Tiguan the driver can close all of them from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Acadia can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Tiguan’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Acadia’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Tiguan to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Acadia doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the Tiguan SEL has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Acadia doesn’t offer cornering lights. The Tiguan also has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

When the Tiguan SEL is put in reverse, the passenger rearview mirror tilts from its original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirror into its original position. The Acadia’s mirror doesn’t automatically adjust for backing.

According to iSeeCars.com the 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan retains 52.24% of its original value after 5 years, more than the 46.9% resale value of the 2026 GMC Acadia after five years, which can save the Volkswagen’s owner up to $8744 in depreciation.
